The first time I went, the exhibit that was on display was called Desire and it was filled with paintings, drawing, sculptures, etc all based around nature.
This time, the exhibit was called Truth and had 30+ pieces that depicted the naked human body. It was quite remarkable. They even had laid down a new bright red floor that honestly took my breath away when I say it. Quite beautiful.
What I love most about ESMoA is their fusion of technology and old school gallery. When you enter the stark white building, there are numbers painted on the floor. You can log in on your smartphone (they have free wifi) and pull up information on the piece you're viewing. There are also probing questions that help you look at the piece in a different way, or question things about it, or a talking-point to share with the person you came with. I think it's really rad. You can view the entire experience here.
Here are some of my favorite pieces from this exhibit.
1. Expulsion from Paradise | Westphalian Master 2. Camouflage Girl -A | Ghada Amer & Reza Farkhondeh 3. Wall Painter | Samuel Salcedo 4. Untitled | Deborah Poynton |
Sometimes it's just necessary to go provoke yourself, and ESMoA let's me do that every couple of months.
Cheers,
Kate
